Purple coneflower comes from the prairies of North America and is a popular garden perennial with pink-purple petals. The genus name comes from the Greek echinos, meaning hedgehog, and describes the spiky, domed centre of the flower head. The extract is standardised to polyphenols.

Quercetin is a yellow plant pigment from the flavonoid group and one of the most common in the everyday diet. Onions, especially red ones, capers, apples, chokeberries and blackcurrants contain a good deal of it. Japanese pagoda tree is a tree of the legume family. Its flowers are among the richest plant sources of rutin, from which quercetin is obtained.
